Pennsylvania Chickens!

Up in the rolling hills of rural Pennsylvania, there sits a little chicken coop:-)

Haha, doesn't that sound like the beginning of a cute little children's book? Anyway, while I was visitng my parents in Pennsylvania a couple weeks ago, my dad drove us out to his co-worker's house to see his chickens. My dad knows how much I love chickens:-)

Clay (the guy who owns the chickens) built this coop himself! Nice, right? I have a little folder on my computer where I keep pictures of chicken coops that I like to give me ideas for the one I'm going to build my future chickens someday...and this one made the list too!

They have about ten chickens I think (something like that-feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, Dad), and they give away their extra eggs to people at work. They have a beautiful flock! A nice variety of breeds.

Just look at these gorgeous chickens! I was in love.

So of course, I had to hold one:-) I handed my camera off to my dad.

SO SOFT!

I'm not gonna lie, I was a bit nervous that it was going to peck my face:-)

Clay and his wife
Thanks so much for letting us come see your chickens! Now I just need to get some of my own. Too bad chickens don't do well in apartments :-(

Snow Fun

This week I'm in Pennsylvania visiting my parents and grandmother. My brother and his girlfriend flew out from Los Angeles to visit too! Today we borrowed some ice skates from people at church and headed down to the Armory! It's been years since I've ice skated, it was so fun!

Skating around!

After ice skating we went sledding! These are the sleds we used our whole childhood every year:-)

Word.

Last year my friend Kathy taught me a new way to start each year. Not with a resolution, but with one word. She got the idea from Christine Kane. Click here to read the original post about this concept.

Last December I decided my word for 2010 would be "presence". I am a very future driven person. I'm always planning my life in the future, but rarely experience the present moment in all its glory. The funny thing about 2010 was that I graduated from college, moved across the country, expanded my business, and started a new hobby/passion that will become a business in 2011 (actually, two passions that will become businesses...more on that later though).

So in ALL of the changes that happened in 2010, I was almost forced to be present since I didn't really know what was coming next. It's always important to plan ahead, but this year I feel like I did a lot better with being thankful for literally every moment in my day. After all, the present is a gift;-)

For 2011, I'm choosing a brand new word for a brand new and exciting year.

Mastery. I chose this word because I have a lot going on in my life:-) A lot of different passions and jobs and hobbies. This year I want to work on mastering the things that are most important to me. I want to work towards mastering the art of running a small business! I want to work towards mastering my craft as a photographer. I don't just want to be okay at all the things I do. I want to be the best I can be! So for 2011, I will strive for mastery!

If you're interested in choosing a word for the year instead of doing the normal New Year's Resolution, check out a list of words here. Once you pick one, leave a comment and tell us what it is! Put it on your Facebook, blog about it, or just write about it in a journal. If you don't write it down, it doesn't exist:-)

Happy word picking!

I Love Great Danes

We spent the past few days before Christmas in Wisconsin with friends and their awesome family. These are the kind of shots that I love to get; photos that tell a little story about your family without the "glamour" of a regular portrait session. Just those little moments in the day that you sometimes take for granted.

This beautiful Great Dane is Sophie. She's the biggest kid in this family of 7:-) She cemented in my mind that Great Danes are the only dog I'd consider getting in the future. Gentle giants, so calm and beautiful. They are protective without being dangerous. And they love to cuddle. She looks a lot like our other friend's Great Dane, Keeta

This kid is hilarious. He's the 3rd child of the 3 boys, and the best eater of them all:-) The first thing I noticed about him was how much he ate! We joked about entering him in an eating contest, because he uses the dipping technique (dipping any food in any liquid...very interesting) on a regular basis. I took these photos at breakfast, and I think they sum him up pretty well.

This little girl is the youngest of the 4 kids:-) This was after breakfast when mom and dad were cleaning up, and all the kids were running around. I just happened to find her in the pantry like this:-) I love it.

So excited for this family, because mom got a brand new Nikon for Christmas, and now she gets to capture these special moments every day!

Stella Bokeh

I've been in Chicago for the last few days visiting friends, and one of my friends has two beautiful daughters, so I've been photographing them:-) Here's one of my favorites from today.
